The Beginning of Revolt of 1857

The earliest incident being the revolt in the 19h Native Infantry in Berhampur 29th March 1857- First spark of revolt at Barrackpore in Bengal where Mangal Pandey killed the British adjutant and was later hanged for tiring on senior officers. 10th May 1857-Ninety sepoys of third Native Regiment at Meerut revolted on the issue of the greased cartridges. After their trial and execution, entire garrison in Meerut revolted and raised the cry of 'Delhi Chalo'.

Immediate Reason

  • By 1837, the ammunition accumulated for the rebellion sparked by the incident of fat cartridges and the soldier revolted.
  • The cartridges of the new Enfield Rifle had a shell of paper (cow and pig fat and had to be amputated before the cartridge was loaded into the rifle This provoked both Hindu and Muslim soldiers because they felt the the use of fat cartridges would corrupt their religion
  • Beginning of Rebellion

  • According to some historians and writers, this rebellion was the result of a widespread and well-organized conspiracy as the Chapati and Red Lotus flowers reach to villages and propagation by nomadic monks, fakirs and madaris shows its prevalence.
  • The rebellion began on May 10, 1857 in Meerut, 36 miles from Delhi. After which it spread rapidly across the whole of North India (from North Punjab to Narmada in the south and from Bihar in the east to Rajasthan in the west).
